Dallas City Release Paths
The City of Dallas operates municipal detention at 1600 Chestnut Street. It is separate from the Dallas County Sheriff complex at Lew Sterrett. A person can leave the city facility for the community after the municipal matter and all holds clear. The city may instead move the person to Dallas County when a county-level case applies. That transfer ends city custody but continues confinement.
Call the city detention center at 214-670-3999 and ask whether the person remains held, was released, or was sent to a named agency. Save the city case or warrant number, arrest date, and any destination given. Those details help connect a later county booking to the same person.
Confirm Dallas City Release
City detention staff are the first status source. A municipal court file can explain the legal event, but only the custody record establishes when staff completed release or transfer. A payment receipt, bond action, dismissal, or time-served entry does not prove the person walked out if another hold remained.
Use a city-first check:
- Collect the full name, date of birth, arrest date, and city case or warrant number.
- Contact the City of Dallas detention center.
- Review the matching municipal court action.
- Request the existing city release or transfer record and destination.
- If Dallas County received the person, use the county lookup and Sheriff records request.
The Dallas County released inmate search and record path applies after facts point to county custody. The Sheriff live lookup has no released archive, so request the county transaction if that later booking also ends.
Dallas City Release Fields
A useful city record connects the person, municipal case, and custody-ending action. Ask for existing code definitions rather than guessing what a short disposition means.
| Field | Use |
|---|---|
| Name, DOB, city identifier | Matches the person and detention event. |
| Arrest and booking time | Places the person in city custody. |
| Actual release or transfer time | Shows when the city episode ended. |
| Release type | Identifies the recorded basis. |
| Destination | Separates community release from transfer. |
| Holds | Explains delay or another agency’s claim. |
Municipal court documents can establish a legal outcome. They cannot timestamp physical departure. Pair the court entry with the city custody transaction, and keep both timestamps if they differ.
Dallas City Versus County
The city and county systems have separate records. City detention is at Chestnut Street. Dallas County intake and release processing centers on Lew Sterrett at Commerce Street. A city transfer to the county creates a new booking trail. Keep both identifiers because a city warrant number may not match the county booking number.
The Sheriff lookup reports current county custody, charges, bonds, holds, and housing. It has no release field. A county disappearance after a city transfer is only a lead. Court records and VINE can support the trail, while the Sheriff transaction supplies the county departure and destination.
- Municipal custody
- Detention by the City of Dallas for a city matter.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian rather than community release.
- Release transaction
- The operational record of time, type, and destination.
- Disposition
- The legal result, which does not prove the exit time.
Dallas City Release Destinations
Community release is one outcome after the city matter and all holds clear. Transfer to Dallas County is another. A county-level case or warrant can place the person in Lew Sterrett even though city custody has ended. Confirm the destination before choosing the next search.
TDCJ handles state imprisonment after a state commitment. Federal custody belongs with USMS or BOP. ICE uses its own locator and field-office channels. Another city or county may also receive the person. Each agency’s release applies only to its custody boundary.
Preserve the times when sources disagree. Court action may precede detention processing, while the receiving booking can appear after transport and intake.
Dallas City Holds and ICE
A city release can be delayed or redirected by another valid hold. If staff identify Dallas County, move to the Sheriff route. If a record identifies ICE, use immigration custody sources. A federal immigration detainer can request custody for up to 48 hours beyond the otherwise applicable release time, excluding weekends and holidays.
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System for a named immigration transfer. ODLS has spelling, age, lag, and retention limits. A failed search does not erase the source agency’s transfer record.
Note: A city release to another agency ends city custody but does not establish community freedom.
Dallas City Detention Contact
The city center is the direct source for its custody event. Ask whether the person is held, released on the municipal matter, or sent to another agency.

If Dallas County received the person, call Dallas County Jail Information at 214-761-9025 and use the Sheriff public-information request for documentary proof. Ask for the county release screen or log when the later departure matters.
Dallas City Records After Transfer
A transfer to Dallas County changes both the custodian and the useful record set. Search the Dallas County Jail Lookup by name, booking number, or case number. A live result can show booking date, location, charges, bond, and holds. It does not show release. Save the county booking number while the entry is visible, then use the court docket, VINE event, jail information line, and Sheriff public-information request if the person later leaves the current lookup.
For an exact county departure, ask for the existing release screen or log, actual date and time, disposition, receiving agency, and hold or transfer indicators. If the county record names TDCJ, BOP or USMS, ICE, another county, or another city jail, continue with that custodian. TDCJ's public search is current-only. BOP can retain a federal release status, while ICE uses ODLS. None of those sources proves the earlier city release time.
A city court outcome and a county custody event may both be accurate. State the narrow fact each supports. The court explains legal cause. The city record ends municipal custody. The Sheriff transaction ends county custody. This keeps one person's sequence clear even when updates appear at different times.
